Archbishop Tutu opens new building extensions at Philani, 13 December 2007
On 13 December 2007, the Board, Committee and staff of Philani were delighted to welcome our Patron, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu to the Philani Development Centre in Site C, Khayelitsha. Archbishop Tutu opened the completed first stage of new building work at the Development Centre and met Philani staff, mothers and supporters, including Mrs Mollander, wife of the Swedish Ambassador to South Africa. The Archbishop was regaled with praise singing by Philani Outreach workers and performances by Philani Educare children. The event was filmed for a special edition of the BBC's long-running religious programme, Songs of Praise, in the UK.
Philani mother and child invited to represent Africa at the Religion, Science and Environment Symposium in Greenland, September 2007
Anneliese Yaso, aged 10, and her mother, Nomfundo Yaso, have been invited to act as amabassadors for Africa at the Religion, Science and the Environment Symposium, organized by HAH the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomaios, to take place in Greenland, 6-13 September 2007.
The Symposium's Committee is inviting one child and mother from each continent, to be present at a 'blessing of the waters' ceremony and to participate in a programme specially prepared for them. One of the aims of the event is to foster international understanding amongst children, aged 8-10.
Anneliese Yaso, from Khayelitsha, attended Philani's Educare from an early age, while her mother, Nomfundo, trained as pre-school teacher. Nomfundo is now an Educare teacher at Philani's Development Centre in Site C, Khayelitsha.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was made possible through the good grace of HRH Irene, Princess of Greece, President of Philani's long-term supporter and donor, World in Harmony.
