We welcome enquiries from local and international students and professionals willing to offer their services to Philani voluntarily. Many Philani volunteers are doctors, dentists, dieticians, newly qualified medics or nurses, or pre-med and paramedical students and artists but we also consider volunteers from other disciplines. Tasks ranging from interesting to sometimes very basic might include: weighing, recording and graphing the weights of malnourished children, assisting with pre-school children in our Educare Programme, sorting donations, assisting with administrative tasks, creating a database, compiling research data, assisting Philani's dietician or shadowing and assisting our Medical Doctors in their clinics.
Requirements for volunteering
If you wish to apply to volunteer with Philani, you will need to...
- Be willing to pitch in with a variety of assistance and participate in the general life of Philani
- Have sufficient financial resources to support yourself while here - you will need to find your own accommodation and be able to rent or buy a car to use - public transport to the townships is not considered safe.
- Be mature enough to understand the reality of daily work in South African informal settlements and be aware of the need for personal security.
- Be able to commit to working with Philani for no less than 6 weeks.
We are not able to present a formal plan of supervision or internship for student volunteers, but can give consistent supervision and mentorship to enable both volunteers and Philani to gain as much as possible from the arrangement.
