VOLUNTEER
We welcome enquiries from local and international students and professionals willing to offer their services to Philani voluntarily. Many Philani volunteers are student or newly qualified medics or nurses, but we also consider volunteers from other disciplines. All volunteers are asked to play a full part in the life of the organisation and contribute with a positive attitude. We prefer to offer volunteers a well-rounded insight into Philani's work, across all programmes. Tasks ranging from interesting to sometimes very basic might include: weighing and recording malnourished children, assisting with pre-school children in our Educare facilities, sorting donations, assisting with project tasks for Philani's Outreach programme, creating a database, assisting Philani's dietician or shadowing and assisting our Medical Doctor in her clinic work.
Requirements for volunteering
If you wish to apply to volunteer with Philani, you will need to...
- Be willing to pitch in with a variety of assistance and participate in the general life of Philani
- Have sufficient financial resources to support yourself while here - you will need to find your own accommodation and be able to rent or buy a car to use - public transport to the townships is not considered safe
- Be mature enough to understand the reality of daily work in South African informal settlements and be aware of the need for personal security
- Be able to commit to working with Philani for a fixed period (usually no less than 6 weeks) - while we don't expect that volunteers should work every day, we find it useful to agree a consistent timetable
Student volunteers
We are not able to present a formal plan of supervision for student volunteers, but do give consistent supervision and mentorship, in order to enable both Philani and volunteers to gain as much as possible from the arrangement.
How to apply
Please email your expression of interest to the Philani Management Committee at info@philani.org.za or use the Enquiry form.
